A number of years ago, a group of Beth El members created the Beth El Book Club to review popular fiction and non-fiction that had Jewish content or theme, or was written by a Jewish author. Several years later, with a membership in the Jewish Book Council, the book club began “An Evening with the Author” events, with visiting authors discussing their current book. Highlights over the years include: Famous Nathan by Lloyd Handwerker, grandson of the original Nathan’s Hotdog king; Pumpkinflowers: A Soldier’s Story with a panel led by two members (former IDF soldiers); Superman by Larry Tye; Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly; and Two Family House by Lynda Cohen Loigman.
The current 2024-2025 schedule includes a ten-month “Visiting Author” Zoom series, free of charge and open to the general public, including other book clubs. The Beth El Book Club is funded through the Beth El Book Club Endowment. For more information, please contact the Beth El Temple office at 717 232-0556.
